Snow in the Park

Snow falls early and melts late in the beautiful mountains of Glacier National Park. Although St. Mary is accessible year-round from Highways 2 and 89, it takes many weeks of plowing and warm weather to open Going-to-the-Sun Road, the steep, scenic drive that bisects the Park.

Plowing of the Going-to-the-Sun Road begins in April each year. The Park anticipates that the road will be fully open across Logan Pass around June 22. In 2023 the road opened on June 13. Check out the maps of road status on the following site. To understand what is involved in getting the road open, check out this blog and photos.
